66.91.138.34: I've been here way to long

There are many ways that one bot can attack another. These fall under two catagagories: shooting and ties.

Shooting
A bot can attack another in many ways using shots. The type of attack the bot uses depends on what is put into the sysvar .shoot

-1 shots

By putting -1 into .shoot, a bot fires a regular feeding shot. The bot on the recieving end of such a shot is forced to shoot some of its energy back.

-2 shots

By putting -2 into .shoot, a bot fires some of its energy. This is not an attack, as it can only benefit the "victim".

-3 shots

Putting -3 into .shoot will fire venom

-4 shots

Putting -4 into .shoot will fire waste

-5 shots

Poison shots. -5 shots cannot be fired manually. They are fired automatically if a -1 shot hits you.

-6 shots

Putting -6 into .shoot will fire a body shot. Body shots are similar to -1 shots but drain an attacker's body rather than his energy.

Info shots

Putting a memory into .shoot will overwrite that memory location of your target with the contents of .shootval

.aimdx .shoot store
628 .shootval store

Will fire a shot that causes an enemy to turn 180 degrees when hit.

Tie Attacks
After storing the tie number in .tienum, a bot can transfer resources via .tieloc and .tieval.

A positive transfer gives the other bot some resources, a negative happily does the opposite.

-1 or energy

Transfer energy by storing -1 into tieloc. It maxes out at 1000 units, although your bot is also limited by the amount of body it has.

-3 or venom

Transfer venom by storing -3 into tieloc.

-4 or waste

If you don't want wait to use .sharewaste, you can also give or take waste with this. Useful if you want a veggy to convert some for you, or reversed for veggies that want an extra meal.

Info Ties

Putting a memory location into .tieloc will overwrite that memory location of your target with the contents of .tieval

MB Share Attacks
Share Energy

The most useful of the share abilities for hunters is the .sharenrg command. If a hunter becomes a technical multibot while it is tiefeeding, it can then steal 99% of another bots energy by storing

99 .sharenrg *.multi mult store

This coupled with shot attacks will soon wipe out any opponent.

Bits
It seems to me there might be a better way to manipulate values to get 1, -1, or 0 etc. for use in cheap birth tie removal et al.

I'm thinking perhaps some sort of bit mask to XOR against the value... I'd really have to crack open my old textbooks in bit manipulation.

let's see, I seem to remember this:

let A,B be numbers

A & A = A (ie: and) A ^ A = 0 (ie: XOR)
--Nums

I was thinking of something similar using compliment.
Just haven't gotten around to throughly testing it yet.

A tier is a bot that continuously ties to anything near. This isn't a terribly difficult mutation to develop, since all you must do is store a number into .tie every cycle.

This novel adaptation has many uses in different enviroments. It simultaneously allows a bot to latch on to food, slow down, and gain space needed to reproduce.

In torroidal sims with gravity (creating a waterfall effect) it is useful to form either clumps of bots latched onto food or "flying" groups of 2-3 that can either float or rapidly fall.(Presumably we as humans could make use of this tie "wing ability" but as far as I know nobody's ever worked on it.)

In nontorroidal sims with gravity The Pit bots have an easy food supply but are initially unable to gain the needed space to reproduce. With ties they can form either a rolling mass of bots or a sort of platform arrangement both allowing them the opportunity to reproduce.

In a high Brownian motion enviroment they can use ties to fight the random motion they are subjected to. The ties allowed them to slow down and feed from the plants in a controlled maner.

Often times they learn to share their food, since no single bot could form the clump on it's own.

Before You Start
You must understand evolution before you can hope to judge the success (or lack thereof) of a simulation. Below are some links to Wikipedia that provide useful knowledge that is generally unknown to the layman on evolution.

* Punctuated Equilibrium - Theory that states that speciation and sudden evolutionary change can only occur in small gene pools. In real life, this tends to be at the edge of what the species finds survivable. These events are rare (hence "punctuated") and are seperated by periods of little change.

Seems to be applicable in Darwinbots since most striking mutations happen in small regions where selection pressures are high.--66.91.138.34 15:26, 24 Nov 2005 (MST)
* Muller's Ratchet - Asexual creatures can accumulate "bad" mutations if mutation rates are higher than selective pressures. Eventually this leads to extinction.

Increase/Decrease
These operators, inc(increase) and dec(decrease), are some of the most useful but are infrequently used. They work by either decreasing or increasing a memory location by 1.

Example
50 inc

adds 1 to *50. When more are used simultaneously the effects are cumulative.

For Example:

50 dec
50 dec
50 dec

Subtracts 3 from *50.
One of the more popular uses of this is for birth tie removal.

.deltie *.robage 1 sub 1000 mult add inc
stop

It has also been used effectivly as an inter-gene signal and method to "freeze" values.

Pre 2.4
Not all locations can be handled with them, memlocs 1-8(more?) can not be inc/dec. This is to ensure that the bots are required to expend some energy.

Post 2.4
All memory locations can be modified with inc/dec, but inc/dec now cost nrg. Cost is equal to 1/10th of a store command.

Value freezing using inc/dec
This technique allows you to "freeze" values or to raise/lower a number to a value and then keep it there. This is best used for when you need a value at a constant number, but without the cost of continously storing it.

' Basic method to demonstrate freezing
' Will keep .tieloc at -1 permanently
cond
start
.tieloc *.tieloc dup div mult inc
.tieloc dec
stop 'More complex method demonstrates freezing
'at a value with .ploc=7
cond
start
'When *.ploc = 7 dec by 1
.ploc *.ploc 7 sub 1000 mult add dec
.ploc inc

Waste is a byproduct of energy consumption. Waste has yet to be standardized, so some actions produce disproptortionately more waste than others.

When waste levels in a bot become greater than waste threshold (set in options panel) the bot will undergo 'alzheimers', where random values are placed in random locations in the bots memory, causing many undesirable effects. The most common is for the bot to store 1 to .fixed, becoming stuck in place.

Waste can fortunatly be removed through several methods the most popular of which is
-4 shoot store with the value of .waste typically specified in shootval. Another favorite method is .sharewaste inc causing the bot to give the bot it is tied to 99% of it's waste. The last, not so well known method is to use -4 .tieloc store to either give or take waste depeding on the value of tieval. Currently there are some bugs with this involving veggies, but otherwise it works perfectly.

Veggies are capable of metabolising waste, converting it back into nrg for use.

stop</pre>

.thisgene tells where in the genome the gene is, .mkvirus is where you store which gene that shall be shot, and .vshoot determines how far the virus will go, the more code put there, the more it costs and more time it takes to make. This virus, if after the reproduction gene, would cause the bot to be unable to reproduce; because the virus is storing a value of zero in the .repro memory location.

1.1 Virus Creation Guide

To make a virus you should follow these steps.
* 1 Decide which of your own genes to copy into the virus or to have the viral gene replicate its own code use thisgene.

* 2 Store this in the .mkvirus command. eg This will copy the virus's gene into a temporary storage array to create the virus.

*.thisgene .mkvirus store

* 3 It takes a finite amount of time to copy this gene into the virus so at the beginning of the process, the gene length is calculated and this value is placed into a count-down timer which can be accessed by the robot via .vtimer(vtimer is the length of DNA * 2). This is a read only value indicating how long you have to wait till the virus is ready. Vtimer is 1 when there is a virus ready to fire. 0 if there is no virus ready to fire, > 1 if there is still time left to wait.

* 4 Once .vtimer reaches one, the virus is ready and it can be fired by placing any non-zero value into .vshoot. this will shoot the virus straight forward. As of last check both backshot and .aimshot work with viruses.

* 5 The virus will appear as a cyan colored shot. It can most easily be distinguished by the normally longer distance it travels.

The Stack
Overview

The basic principle is that everything is done passing through a last-in first-out stack. It's like a stack of dishes: you can take or put a dish only from the top of the stack, all others are inaccessible. The language's instructions work on the data that is on the top of the stack, removing them and putting the results in their place.
----
For example, to sum two numbers, you should put them in the stack, and then invoke the sum instruction. It will remove the two numbers, calculate the sum, and put the result on top of the stack.

It may seem complicated, but's not. For instance, where you usually write

b+c=a

now you should write

b c add

The add instruction removed b and c from the stack and replaced it with the sum of the two, a.

Just like a pile of dishes can get too big, when the stack fills up with numbers it will begin to overflow and will lose the oldest numbers. Ordinarily very few numbers remain in the stack for more than one gene or cycle, but sloppy or mutated DNA can cause this. It is easy to empty the stack by placing several add, sub, or mult commands in a row.
