User talk:Endy

If you use these User_talk pages for messages ... when you come to the Wiki, and are logged in ...
there will be an alert message at the top informing you that you have new messages.
This is true of anyone's User_talk page ...that is one of their main puposes at a wiki.
You can get to my User_talk page by clicking on the little talk thing in my sig. Griztalk 18:34, 15 Oct 2005 (MST)

Endy said: Cool, didn't know that. I was thinking you had to manually check it every so often :) This should make it easier to co-ordinate changes. I wish we had something like at the forum so we can tell when someone else is here.

Yeah ... and if you use three tilde ie " ~ ~ ~ " to sign after your message then your User name will show up so I know who I am talking to ...
and can get back to you ASAP. Using 4 of them " ~ ~ ~ ~ "' will give a time sig as well ...which is good for indicating when someone said
what they said. Like so: Griztalk 18:50, 15 Oct 2005 (MST)

Thanks, I feel like a babe in the woods here. I know what I want to say and do, I just don't know how to do it Endy 18:53, 15 Oct 2005 (MST)

I've been doing Wikis for awhile now and know a few tricks so feel free to ask anything.
Things are looking good tho ... excellent work you are doing.
Will bring some more editing tips over ... how to do tables and pics and such as I find time.
Made a Sandbox page ... a place where you can practice your chops and not bother anyone. ;) Griztalk 19:12, 15 Oct 2005 (MST)

spam

Looks like you've had your own problems with spammers. About how often does this happen?--Endy 19:24, 15 Oct 2005 (MST)

all of the time! ;)
you don't see much of it here yet as it is on www.darwinbots ...
but on the generic wikis it happens a lot.
you have to stay on top of it by checking the Special:Recentchanges page constantly.
that's always the first thing i do when i come to a wiki ... look to see if someone
i don't know, or someone not logged in, has made a lot of changes ... then check out those pages.
we should get Num to give us sysop privileges so we can block users or IP's that do it
and restore spammed pages. you can always revert a page to a previous page in history
but it's a lot easier to do a rollback by clicking on the 'diff' of a subverted page
from the Recent Changes page ... but i think you need admin privileges to do so. Griztalk

No problem guys, I was thinking of giving them to Endy like a week back, but I forgot. Shame on me.

DB interest/history

Endy: It seems like its been slowly but steadily gaining in popularity and interest. Most of the other alife programs don't have anywhere near the user/producer interaction. kind of surprising. There's a History page around that tells about the whole cycle

you know ... i swear DB came from an ALife sim i used to play with long ago ...
like 4 or 5 years ago ... and the idea was open source and even had a yahoo
group for some feedback of ideas. i used to run a screen saver version of it
on my old computer. but i cannot for the life of me recall the name ...
or find the old yahoo group. in fact it was part of that search that resulted
in finding DB. will have to see if i can get the old computer to boot ...
having some problems there ... and see if i can find any evidence of it there.
it was great ... i used to watch it for hours ... very similar to DB ...
but with the shapes, arms, leg, whatever you want to call them ...
being something that mutated as well. so there was a visible difference in the
various life forms ... and that had a great deal to do with how they interacted
with one another for breeding and combat. that was good as one could 'see'
and differentiate between them. man it bugs me i can't find a word close enough
to end up in a search result.
AhHa!!!! found it!! Primordial Life
no wonder i couldn't recall ... we're talking 1998-2000 here!
but followed the links i had stashed and found the site:
now i figured it was just out of date just a remnant still on the web but!!!
shows that there are folks currently playing/interfacing on the web right NOW!
i don't have time right now to check it out ...
all i recall is liking this very much ... and being dissapointed by all the
alife sims i've explored since ... until i discovered DB.
so will pass this on to you here and to the forum if i get a chance ...
then i'll be away for a week or so.Griztalk 08:22, 16 Oct 2005 (MST)

You really need to implement the netcode of Primordial life into Darvinbots. They have a master server that connects a client to up to 4 other clients and sums up population statistics of all clients. For example the right border of 65.246.124.54 in europe gets connected with the upper border of 23.143.32.12 in Asia ... forming a 24/7 network. Simulated life forms go around the world. Of yourse you can also set local ips. Every client has different settings and sizes, making it different biotopes connected together wildly (they are not even syncronised, it only teleports life forms from one border to another or reflects them) and it still works. That way you can easily isolate populations from another for some time just by disconecting and force them to met other life forms by reconecting to another ip. --Ollj 14:00, 23 Dec 2005 (MST)

In/out

There are more now? Cool, can't wait to try them out--Endychat 19:26, 17 Oct 2005 (MST)

You bet there's more! 3 more! Basically I think if ant bots are ever to be a realistic option, you need ways of sharing locations. Locations take 2 in/out s to register 1 location, so...

Basically I think bots should have more bandwidth! --Numsgil 20:26, 17 Oct 2005 (MST)

Did you notice?

that now when we reedit these pages ... the time sig from previous messages gets moved to the next line with a leading space ... and therefore a 'blue box'? wonder what that's about? have never noticed that happening before?Griztalk

AHHA! never mind. my bad ... i had altered my sig page ... added a commented out note ... which it saw as a space.
ah well ... it's those mistakes that result in the real learning. ;)Griztalk

Hey Endy ... where do you live? What time zone? i noticed you were here at 2,3,4am my time ... EDT- -4GMT.
so you must live somewhere other than where i do or ... you were indeed bored! ;) Griztalk 07:19, 16 Oct 2005 (MST)

Hey Griz,

Yeah, I like mixing and melding any interesting bits I see.
I think if you take the best of all features you can wind up with something better than ever.
I'm currently stationed in Pearl Harbor about 6 hour difference back.
Work on a Sub for the Navy, fortunatly not expecting to leave the yards for some time.
Once every 3 days I have to remain onboard, hense the oddball posting patterns.
It actually helps me think of ideas, since there isn't much else to do.
Made Ideas and Whimsical links(main page)
I'm thinking they'll be hubs for user creativity.
Similar to off topic at the forum but more lasting and group interactive
Kind of wanted a way to address a few small problems we've been having in the main manual.

ah ... a fellow swab! ;)
spent 6 years in uncle sam's very large canoe club my-own-self ...
3 years as a reactor operator onboard uss enterprise in the tonkin gulf 70-73.
not the starship enterprise (although we did endevor to go where no man has
gone before when on liberty in the philippines] ;) but the nuke carrier cvan-65.
so i've been to pearl ... but only had 8 hours liberty.
must be a pretty cool place to hang out!
will take a quick look at your new pages ...
then i'm goin' be gone for a week or two to my cabin ...
got wood to cut for winter [wood heat only] and get it ready so i can hang out
there and enjoy the solitude this winter.
so hold down the fort ... c u when i do.

using links in a table

if you get bored ... here is something you can think about/play with for linking to pages ...
just something graphic and more visual than plain text.
you can alter the number of them or the colors ... whatever looks good ...
you know ... a little bling-bling. ;) Griztalk 20:46, 21 Oct 2005 (MST)
